Chowder history is known to be hundreds of years old. It came from the Latin word "calderia", which means a place for warming things. It also means cauldron, which later in time became cooking pot. Since the first plain dish of chowder, it is known "a poor man's food" made of fish and fresh vegetables stewed in a cauldron.
